The Cavendish Fellowship emerged from the visionary thinking of Mr. Reg Elson, a distinguished Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, UK. Reg's own journey in orthopedics led him to the illustrious Wrightington Hospital, where the foundations of modern hip replacement surgery were laid.
As the field of hip replacement surgery rapidly expanded, so did the complexity of associated complications. Reg recognised that addressing and preventing these complications demanded a level of specialised expertise that was often lacking. Recognising the scarcity of opportunities for surgeons in training to gain exposure to advanced hip surgery, he conceived the idea of establishing the Cavendish Fellowship.
The inaugural Patron of the Cavendish Hip Foundation, the Duke of Devonshire (Andrew Cavendish), was one of Reg's patients. His gracious support, coupled with generous contributions raised by the Foundation, allowed for the initial sponsorship of a single fellow and later the appointment of two fellows to work alongside the remarkable Ian Stockley. Ian was later joined by Bob Kerry and Andy Hamer, marking the beginning of a remarkable expansion of the unit.
Subsequent additions to the unit included the exceptional talents of Simon Buckley, Prof. Mark Wilkinson, and Andrew Gordon. Following Ian's well-deserved retirement, Tim Harrison assumed a pivotal role within the unit, succeeded by Saif Salih in 2019.
To date, the Cavendish Fellowship has nurtured the growth of 31 fellows, each of whom has gone on to hold prestigious Consultant Posts specialising in complex primary and revision lower limb arthroplasty. Further information about our distinguished past fellows can be found below."
